The Grotto under the castle

42

Peter Zumwald, parish priest in Jaun from 1911 to 1917, had a Lourdes grotto built below the castle ruins. Unfortunately, the fragile rock and the steep access gradually led to the grotto being forgotten. The image of the Virgin Mary and the statue of St Bernadette became increasingly damaged.

In the 1940s, the entrance and place of prayer were repaired and renovated under the leadership of the Catholic youth organisation of Jaun. The grotto was extended in the 1970s. Father Xaver Ruffieux, a great admirer of Brother Klaus, the father of our country, blessed his statue there.

In the last few years of his life, Armin Mooser, a retired bricklayer's foreman from Jaun, spent countless hours repairing the site and making it more accessible. The grotto beneath the castle has become a popular place for young and old to take a walk, pray and enjoy a quiet moment of contemplation.
