Charmey Castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century on a knoll overlooking the Village d'en-Haut at a place called Sur la Roche (now the chamois park), on the last buttress of the Vanil Blanc. It was originally an important building: the inhabitants of the area had a right of refuge there, in exchange for a maintenance fee on behalf of the Lords of Corbières. On the death of the last heiress of the seigneury, Jeannette, in 1360, the castle passed into the hands of the de Prez family, before being attacked by the Bernese raid of 1407, which reduced it to ruins, along with the fortifications of Bellegarde, upstream, and Bourg de Montsalvens, downstream.

According to historian Bernard de Vevey, the last section of wall collapsed in the winter of 1824. However, a watercolour by Jean-Joseph Combaz from the same year shows sections of the wall on top of the mound. The castle - and perhaps even a fortified site, as a burgum is mentioned in medieval documents - was indeed at the top of the mound. The foundations can still be seen beneath the vegetation. In 1895, an anonymous tourist took a photo of his family through the window of a building that may have been the last remaining part of the ancient castle or one of its outbuildings. A postcard from the early 20th century also seems to bear this out.

In 1964, a thick wall of rubble agglomerated in lime cement was uncovered above the power station. This may have been the foundations of a watchtower guarding the passage over the Jogne to the Motélon or Intyamon valleys, before the Bulle-Boltigen road was built in the 1870s.
