Montsalvens Dam

3
Inaugurated in 1921 after three years of work, the Montsavens dam at the top of the Jogne Gorges is considered to be the first arch dam in Europe to have a double curvature, horizontal and vertical, a technical feat due to the calculations of the engineer Alfred Stucky using his pioneering concept of elastic deformation.
Built by Entreprises Electriques Fribourgeoises, now Groupe E, this 52-metre-high structure has a 110-metre-long crown. With a head of between 96 and 122 metres, depending on the level of water in the lake, it supplies the Broc power station with electricity for more than 13,000 households. At the foot of the dam, the water necessary for the life of the Jogne is also turbined before flowing back into the river.
When the dam was filled with water, a 70-hectare artificial lake was created.
