Unfortunately, it is not possible to pinpoint the date when the castle was built. However, it was probably built in the 12th century. The lords of Corbers (Corbières) were an influential noble family at the time. The Jauntal valley was one of their possessions. They built their summer residence on this rocky outcrop, with a good view of the valley (in all directions) and supposedly in great safety from enemies of all kinds.
As was so often the case at the time, the noble family was unable to hold on to its possessions.
1250: Richard von Corbers expands and enlarges the existing castle complex.
1404: Peter von Corbers sells his share of the Jaun landscape to the County of Gruyères. The neighbouring villages of Rougemont, Château-d'OEx and Saanen then concluded a charter with Bern. This, in turn, did not please Gruyères at all. It was the beginning of warlike disputes between them.
1407 : The castle was almost completely destroyed by the Bernese.
1408 : Peace is concluded and the prisoners are released. However, the castle is not rebuilt.
1994 : The years and erosion have left their mark. Under the initiative of Alphonse Cottier, a committee is formed with the aim of saving the castle ruins from total decay. Establishment of the Ballavuarda Castle Ruins Foundation.
1995 : Start of the restoration work. The canton of Fribourg, various neighbouring municipalities, the Loterie Romande and private individuals contributed to the financing.
2005 : End of the restoration work.
2010 : Dissolution of the foundation. Since then, the castle has once again become the property of the municipality
