The hydroelectric power station

Jaun's first hydroelectric power station is located below the waterfall. It consists of an elongated building with a small, square tower on top. This small power station was used by EW Jaun Energie AG to generate electricity. Thanks to the waterfall, which sometimes gushes 6000 litres per second, the company produced 2.4 million kWh, which accounted for 60% of the village's electricity from renewable energy sources.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Marcel Buchs, a roofer in Jaun, began to utilise water power. He bought the old mill, which was located at the lower end of this waterfall. On Christmas Eve 1912, electric light illuminated the village of Jaun for the first time.
Marcel Buchs converted the old mill into a power plant. The grandson of the innovative Marcel Buchs, who incidentally also goes by the name Marcel Buchs again, was the third generation managing director of the only private electricity plant in the canton of Fribourg until the end of 2020. Because no succession could be guaranteed from the family business and because a lot of investment would have had to be made, Marcel Buchs decided to sell the company on 1 January 2021.
